Money Isn’t My Main Beef in Writing

Medium’s uncertain future won’t stop me. And it shouldn’t stop you.

Let me get this out of the way: if you’re writing just for the money, good luck. You are going to need it.

Do you know what kills the joy of writing? Chasing dollars.

The harder you focus on making money, the harder it becomes to actually make any. And the more you run after it, the less you notice what’s happening right in front of you.

I didn’t start writing for the money. If I had, I’d have quit a long time ago.

Writing isn’t exactly a “get rich quick” scheme.

I started because I had something to say.

I write because I love it.

I love taking a tangled mess of thoughts and shaping them into something that makes sense. Something that might matter to someone.

I want to share my story. I want to show people they can change their lives, too — if they want to. That’s why I sit down and open my laptop, even when it feels like pulling teeth.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love for my writing to pay off. Recognition and a little cash are nice. But it can’t be the reason.
